How to Spend a Day in Wynwood

Assuming you didn’t go to Miami only to visit Wynwood, let me narrow it down for you. Here’s a guide on how to spend a day in Wynwood. Realistically, I would recommend you spend two nights in Wynwood, but I guess I can understand you only allotting 24 hours.

You’ve seen The Wynwood Walls on Pinterest and Instagram, sometimes front and center, other times serving as backdrops for models and product shoots. Did you know the Wynwood Walls area is only a small portion of Miami’s Wynwood Art District? You could spend days strolling through, looking at art, shopping and eating at different restaurants.

First things first: be prepared, Wynwood is further inland than Miami Beach (obviously), so there’s usually no breeze. It gets toasty. So toasty in fact that I sweated through my olive green romper one day and had to change two hours in. Oh yes. It was not appealing. The upside? There are plenty of places to pop in for a quick A/C or drink break.

You could really map out your day several ways, but the most logical for me is to start at breakfast, park your car and get to walking! The cheapest parking is street parking, which gets hard to find past 11 am on weekends. Find a spot early and you won’t have to worry the rest of the day.

Salty Donut Wynwood

Morning:

First stop: The Salty Donut. You guys know my favorite thing to try in a new place is their specialty donut shop, and this is Miami’s. It used to be a food truck with some picnic tables, but The Salty Donut has graduated to a super cute brick-and-mortar. Now they have A/C and are able to make donuts pretty much all day! They used to have a limited amount and would sell out super quick, so this is a game changer.

Pro tip: go with a friend and get a few to share. They have tons of flavors, too many to pick just one! Also, get yourself that iced coffee. If you can handle a sweet drink on top of donuts, go for the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Latte. If not, get yourself an iced latte or cold brew to counteract the sweetness of the donuts.

After you’ve sufficiently stuffed your face, get to walking! You can walk down that street onto a side street or to the main road, NW 2nd Ave, or even walk all the way to the Loveism mural that faces the interstate. Every wall has some kind of art and there are cute shops along most streets, so you can stop in and buy locally made goods too!

Not feeling donuts? Try Zak the Baker for their amazing baked goods and sandwiches. They’re also 100% Kosher, if that’s a concern.

Afternoon:

I typically get hungry fairly early in the day after doing all the walking, so my next recommended stop is lunch. There are tons of food options for lunch in Wynwood, even food trucks depending on the day you go. My favorite stop is Zak the Baker, a Kosher bakery and cafe. They serve delicious sandwiches and baked goods, and it’s just satisfying enough to not leave you feeling overly full. Sadly, Zak the Baker isn’t open on Saturdays, so that’s a no-go if you’re going then. For a Saturday lunch, I would recommend The Butcher Shop Beer Garden for a satisfying burger and beer or Wynwood Kitchen for their ropa vieja empanadas and guac. Wynwood Kitchen is right on the Wynwood Walls, so it’s usually a bit more crowded.

After you’ve eaten, get back to walking. Stop into the Wynwood Walls and make sure to pop into all the little arcades. There are cute candle and stationary stores as well as delicious coffee shops at every corner.

At some point, make sure you stop into one of Wynwood’s many breweries and maybe even take a brewery tour. My personal favorite is J. Wakefield Brewing, for their seasonal beers, Star Wars decor and overall chill vibe. Right now I’m loving their Hefeweizen, El Jefe. Really tasty and refreshing on a hot summer day!

Evening:

I would say keep walking. I know, I sound crazy, but I’ve actually walked 4.5 miles in Wynwood in a few hours before, and we didn’t even cover it all! That said, I’m the type of person who would like to go home, shower and refresh before going out again. I recommend you do that then make your way to Wynwood Yard or another restaurant before you bar hop. Depending on your taste in music or the vibe you’re looking for, there tends to be something for everyone. I’m more into the chill, outdoor vibe, so I’d grab food by a truck in Wynwood Yard and have some drinks there before popping over to Boxelder Craft Beer Market. They also have live music and a food truck from time to time.

My general note to you would be to wear comfortable, breathable clothes. You’ll do lots of walking, likely take lots of pictures, and be under the sun for several hours. Wear sunblock and make sure to stay hydrated! People tend to forget how draining the sun can be, especially combined with the Miami humidity!

This is how to spend a day in Wynwood now, but it’s continuing to grow. Who knows what my recommendations would be a year from now!
