How to Spend Valentine’s Day When You’re Single – in a Pandemic

One of my more popular posts around this time of year is about how to spend Valentine’s Day when you’re single. While those tips are still great options, the pandemic is probably going to prevent you from doing them all. So here are a few options for spending this pandemic Valentine’s Day if you’re flying solo.

6 ways to spend valentines day if you're single 2

1. Have a Self Care Valentine’s Day

I know, I know. You’ve probably really leaned into self care a ton in the past year. You might even be past it. I got really into self care at the beginning of quarantine, but I’ve definitely neglected it from time to time. Plus, you can make this a holiday-themed self care day! If it were me, I might go for a walk, spend time reading, have a nice long shower and maybe give myself a mani-pedi. Then I’d follow that up with a delicious vegan pizza and a bottle of red wine. Yes, the whole bottle. I don’t drink often, but if the occasion calls…

2. Host a Virtual Galentine’s Dinner

Surely you’re not the only single friend you have, right? Well, invite them to a Galentine’s evening. You can get dressed up or stay cozy, have dinner or watch a movie together, or maybe even play some kind of game. (Something a la We’re Not Really Strangers, you know?

3. Spend Time Journaling

Being single on Valentine’s Day can be difficult for people, and one of my recent favorite ways to destress and decompress has been to journal. When I’m upset, pissed off, or just hurt, I have a tendency to take it out on the wrong people. Instead I’ve been journaling, which is kind of like talking through my feelings alone in a private setting. So if you’re feeling down or uncomfortable, or even happy really, maybe some time journaling in self reflection would help!

4. Remember It’s Just Another Day

This is probably my favorite tip, mostly because it’s how I usually treat Valentine’s Day. For me this year, it’ll be another Sunday. Just another day before a regular week of work.

5. Completely Disconnect

Yep, that’s right. No phone, no laptop. No social media at all. I think fortunately since most of us aren’t shopping as much as we normally would, we’re not as bombarded in the real world with all things Valentine’s Day everywhere we turn. But you better believe come that weekend, all sorts of rom-com type foolishness is going to pop up on your social feeds. That’s wonderful for all those people, but personally I’d rather not.

6. Practice Gratitude

It may have been one of the shittiest years of your life, and bad things have happened, but you’re here. Those people in your life who love you are here. Write them a letter. Send them flowers. Thank yourself for making it this far in one piece. It’s a weird habit to get into, but every day that I acknowledge my gratitude, even in silent prayer or meditation, is better than the days I don’t.
